Italian (attributed), painting on board titled "S. Rafael",
scene includes the archangel,St. Rafael holding Tobias' Fish,
17th century, 13 1/2" high, 6" wide, framed in gold-toned wood
frame. Condition: Very good, some paint missing in upper right
corner, 6 or so faint spots/stains along right side. Represents
the story in the Old Testament "Apocrypha," according to which
Raphael, as the traveling companion of Tobias, encouraged the
young man to catch a fish and gut it, setting aside the heart,
liver and gall. The first 2, when burned, warded off evil
spirits; the gall, when applied to Tobias’s father’s eyes,
eventually cured the old man’s blindness. The fish attribute is
more commonly associated with Tobias himself, but since this is
an independent panel, it clearly serves to identify Raphael from
the other archangels. |
